CBSE 2020 Update: No Fail, No Compartment in Board Marksheet

Update on: 11 Feb 2020, 11:53 AM

Failure in its first instance is a negative word. To fail means there is certainty in being incompetent to meet standards or objectives of a task. Hence, it leaves a disheartening effect if present on the document a person is carrying for his whole life.

Word โ€œfailโ€ is very disheartening especially in education and as a result we are observing many cases when students take their life just because they fail in 10th or 12th exams. Taking the severity of the issue into consideration Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has decided not to mention fail or compartment on the marksheet of 10th and 12th marks. CBSE is going to make this change on the marksheet in the board results of the session 2020.

CBSE will look for other words in place of fail or compartment. For this, the board has sought information from the principals of all affiliated schools, which words should be used in place of fail or compartment. The idea behind is that students should not feel negative while looking at the result on the marksheet rather, they should have the feel that they have area of improvement or they have another chance to improve further. It will keep them enthusiastic to succeed in future.

We know that CBSE releases the result for all students at once i.e. passed, failed or compartment candidates.

Board has also suggested that instead of compartmental, supplementary, second exam, special exam can be mentioned on the marksheet for compartment examination. ย Apart from this, words like not-qualified (unqualified) can be given instead of fail. Final decision will be taken based on the majority approval on given words. Board has asked all the principal to send four words.

While expressing the concern, the board has written a letter to the principal stating that once children realizes failure, it is very difficult to remove it from their mind. Often, they go into depression. They feel that now they will not be able to do anything in future. In such a situation, children need to be encouraged and motivated. Its is the duty of parents, schools and board to make students strong enough to handle failure and overcome it.

Board is also planning to apply the new change in the annual school examination. This new initiative will help students to accept the failure in positive way. They will be able to move ahead with enough enthusiasm.

In order to maintain peace in the mind of students CBSE introduced such changes in 2009 when grade system was implemented instead of marking system. Later, it was changed again to marking system but with no mention on pass or fail on the marksheet. Rather, grades were mentioned on the marksheet.

In the contemporary scenario the change is very much needed for a stress-free successful life of all the children and students. The change will bring improvement in studentsโ€™ way of handling failure and challenges. When we look at wider picture it will help them grow tremendously.

As rightly illustrated Failure is not the last thing, rather it is the FIRST ATTEMPT IN LEARNING
