Failed the CBSE Board Exam? Here’s What You Can Do Next

Update on: 13 May 2025, 05:32 PM

Just a few days back, CBSE announced Class 10 and Class 12 board exam results on May 13, 2025. Approximately 42 lakh students appeared for the exams which is more than last year. For many, it was a moment of joy, but for some, the results may not have gone as expected. If you’re among those who couldn’t clear one or more subjects, please remember—this is just a bump in the road, not the end of your success journey.

How many students are in the Compartment this year?

Might be difficult to digest this news of you not being able to perform well in a few of your subjects which is completely alright but hear  me out you’re not alone. Nearly 3 lakh students have been placed in the compartment category this year.

That means thousands of others are also preparing to give themselves another chance. So, take a moment to breathe, you’re in this with many other candidates, and there’s a clear path forward.

What does it take to pass the Class 10th & 12th CBSE Exams?

For board exam aspirants to pass your Class 10 board exams, you need at least 33% marks in each subject & similarly, 33% in both theory and practical components for class 12. There’s no need to worry about an overall percentage; just focus on passing each subject.

Also, make sure to pass your internal assessments with good numbers. If you’ve missed the mark, you’re eligible for the compartment exams, which give you another shot at clearing them.

Didn’t Clear? Here’s What You Should Know First!

First of all, it’s okay to feel upset or lost; it happens to most of us. Failing an exam is hard, but it doesn’t define what your future looks like. Many successful people have failed at some point in their lives.

Take a short break to collect your thoughts and then come back stronger with full bulletproof prep. Simply said, what’s important now is that you don’t give up.

Your Next Step: Compartment Exams

If you have failed in one or two  subjects, you can appear for compartment exams. These exams are usually conducted in July or August, giving you ample time to prepare. Start by identifying which subject you need to work on in case of two subjects.

Get help from your teachers, watch online tutorials, and focus specifically on your weak areas. Solving past years’ papers can also help build confidence and improve time management.

If you need extra support, don’t hesitate to ask for help—whether from a tutor, your school, or even peers who’ve done well.

How many times can you appear for a Compartment?

CBSE gives students up to three chances to pass a compartment subject. The first is usually in July (right after results), the second is in the following March, and the third is around July again.

Where to check your Compartment Results and Updates?

Results and updates related to compartment exams will be available on these official CBSE websites:

cbseresults.nic.in

results.cbse.nic.in

You can also use the Digi-Locker app to access your mark sheets, certificates, and results. Keep checking these platforms for updates regarding dates and admit cards.

How to Cope with the Stress

Feeling anxious is completely natural during this time. But there are so many ways to ease your results pressure. Try to talk openly with your family or someone you trust.

Even a short conversation can help lighten the emotional weight. Maintaining a simple routine, taking regular study breaks, eating well, and sleeping enough can also make a big difference.

You can also try light exercise, listening to music, or even meditation to stay calm. Avoid comparing your journey with others—everyone has their own path.

Final words: You’re more than your marks

Failing one or two subjects does not mean you’re a failure. Exams are just one part of life, and they can always be retaken.

What matters most is your will to trust  yourself and try to surpass your current setbacks. This isn’t a setback, it’s a big comeback waiting to happen. So, chin up, focus forward, and give it your best shot. We’re rooting for you. You’ve got this.
