NEET 2021 may be conducted twice a year: Media Reports

Update on: 17 Oct 2019, 12:12 PM

After the Scrapping of AIIMS and JIPMER entrance exam from 2020, Union Ministry of Health is planning to conduct NEET twice a year from 2021. NTA Director Vineet Joshi told The Indian Express that NEET may be held two times in a year, on similar lines as the JEE Main – engineering entrance exam. Joshi also added that currently the planning for this proposal is still at a preliminary state and details are being worked out by the NTA and will be presented by the authorities soon.

How this Proposal Came Out?

He further shared that this proposal to hold NEET twice a year is in response to requests from students as well as teachers. “We have received lots of communication from the students and teachers across the country and are, therefore, thinking of conducting it twice a year, like the JEE Main,” Joshi added. With the inception of NTA in 2018, NEET was supposed to be conducted twice a year in online mode. However, that decision was never implemented because of logistical limitations.

In order to provide clarification on the issue, NTA director also said that as the plan to hold the medical entrance exam is yet in its planning stage, there would be no change to the NEET 2020 exam. Why hold NEET exam twice a year?

Under the current system, where NEET is only held once a year, missing the exam or failing in the first one would mean that students will end up wasting an entire year. They would have to wait for a complete year before re-attempting NEET exam. With NEET exam being held twice a year, this problem will be resolved for the students. With two attempts available, students will have less pressure upon them to clear the medical entrance exam and in-turn they will be able to attempt the exam more comfortably. Also, after scrapping of AIIMS and JIPMER, NEET will be the single point entry test for MBBS and BDS courses offered across India. Therfore, to accommodate the increased number of candidates and facilitate admission to the increased number of MBBS seats, NEET exam will be held twice in a year.
