Mathematics & Physics Not Necessary to Be an Engineer: AICET New Guidelines

Update on: 16 Mar 2021, 04:00 PM

Recently AICET released its approval process handbook 2021-2022 with a new rule. This rule brought smiles to the face of students who want to be an engineer but, could not do so as they don’t have Math as the mainstream subject. In this new handbook: The all India Council for Technical Education, AICTE changed the eligibility criteria for UG admissions. Now, Mathematics and Physics are not compulsory to get admission in engineering courses.

Till now, Mathematics and Physics were the compulsory subjects in Class 12 for getting admission in undergraduate engineering courses, B.E/ B. Tech. Now students have to choose any three subjects from physics, chemistry, mathematics, biology, computer science, electronics, IT, information practices, technical vocational subject, biotechnology, agriculture, business studies, engineering graphics, and entrepreneurship.

Major Highlights of AICET approval process handbook 2021 -2022

  1. Mathematics and Physics subjects in Class 12 are not compulsory for taking engineering admission.
  2. Students must choose any of the three subjects from physics, chemistry, mathematics, biology, computer science, electronics, IT, information practices, technical vocational subject, biotechnology, agriculture, business studies, engineering graphics, and entrepreneurship to get admission in engineering courses.
  3. Apart from the change in subjects for the students aspiring to become engineers, AICTE has also stated that the unreserved category students must have scored 45 percent marks, and reserved category students must score 40 percent marks in order to pass class 12.
  4. Bridge courses in mathematics, physics, and engineering drawing shall be provided at the engineering universities.

What AICET Chairman said?

As per AICET Chairman “It’s not optional, but the subject options engineering discipline has been expanded. Similar, there would be different mandatory courses for different disciplines”.

New Rule Effect on JEE Main Exam

AICTE council said the decision to make Physics and Mathematics optional subjects for undergraduate engineering admission is in line with the National Education Policy and it is not “binding” on states, universities, and entrance exams, JEE for IITs. “They may continue to hold the entrance exams in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as is being done now and gradually decide to conduct exams in other subjects later…”

Admission to Engineering colleges will finally depend on eligibility criteria set for entrance examinations. For admission to engineering colleges, including IITs, NITs, through JEE Main 2021, candidates must pass their qualifying (Class 12) exam with Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects along with one of these subjects: Chemistry, Biotechnology, Biology, and Technical Vocational subject.

Criticism Faced by AICET Decision

These amendments by AICET are facing huge criticism from teachers and various universities across the country. As per the experts, the new amendments by the AICTE have received criticism earlier on as class 12 Maths is considered the foundation for engineering. Various courses like Data Science and Artificial Intelligence require a lot of Mathematics knowledge. Therefore, it is necessary that AICET should rethink the amendments done in the approval process handbook 2021-2022.

As per the educational experts, the Bridge course will not be able to replace class 12th mathematics as it is only a remedial course, and the engineering curriculum has mathematics till the fifth semester.

Scope for Students

Due to AICET New Guidelines now, students who wish to pursue their career in Engineering can apply for their desired engineering courses. AICET opened the gates of engineering for a wide range of subjects and students. The new rules will also allow students from medicine and commerce students to pursue engineering courses.

Students who have passed three-year diploma examinations with at least 45 % (40% for reserved category) marks are also eligible to apply for the engineering courses. However, in the case of Diploma students, “their admissions will be subject to vacancies in the first year, in case the vacancies at the lateral level are exhausted”.

Fulfill engineering dreams with the right study books and preparation. All the JEE aspirants can select study books from MTG stores to complete JEE Main preparations: JEE Main Guide, JEE Champion, JEE Main Previous year papers, JEE Sample papers, JEE Main online test series , and JEE crash courses. Best books are needed to create the best scores.
