CBSE Launches New Assessment Framework for Class 6 to 10: Check Major Highlights

The Central Board of Secondary Education launches its new assessment framework for Class 6 to 10 students in collaboration with the British Council. This new assessment will focus on competency and skills of students for the subjects like English, Science and Maths.

As per the CBSE Board, the new system will help teachers to test the actual learning ability of Children instead of simple mugging information. Under the new system, teachers will be trained to create questions papers and other assessment methods that test the actual competency of students.

Official Statement by the Education Minister

As per official statement by the Education Minister, Mr. Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank the new assessment will be aligned with the National Policy’s (NEP) vision of achieving global standard in assessment. The new framework will replace the “existing rote learning model and will focus on assessing students based on their competencies needed to solve day-to-day problems.”

Mr. Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank said that the new framework aims to improve the overall learning outcomes of students mainly covering three subjects — English (reading), Science, and Maths.

Major Highlights of the New Assessment Framework for Class 6 to 10

1. The question papers and new assessment modes will be changed in phased manner over 2 to 4 years.
2. Main subjects covered are Science, Maths and English.
3. The assessment framework is being launched in line with the National Education Policy (NEP 2020) to improve the level of English, science and maths lessons taught from classes 6 to 10.
4. The aim of launching this new assessment is to test students based on their competencies required to handle day-to-day problems.
5. In the first phase selected Kendriya Vidyalayas, Navodaya Vidyalayas, UT Chandigarh and private schools across the country will participate in the programme which will be rolled out to all 25,000 CBSE schools in India by 2024, as per CBSE.
6. The CBSE collaborated with British Council and three UK agencies, Cambridge, NARIC and Alphaplus to develop this assessment.
7. The suggested framework has been introduced to improve the quality of teaching and implementation of changes recommended in the National Education Policy 2020.
8. British Council along with AlphaPlus as the UK knowledge partner designed and developed this framework after analysing the current learning and assessment model in Indian schools.
9. As per the CBSE, this project will directly support 15 education leaders, 2,000 school principals; 15 senior government leaders; 180 test item writers; 360 master trainers which will further impact 25,000 CBSE schools that include 2,000 JNV’s and KV’s, 132,000 teachers and 20 million learners by 2024.
10. The framework is the basis for a larger project exercise currently underway where 40 assessment designers, 180 test item writers and 360 master trainer mentors are being trained in using this framework to create a model question bank and collection of ideal lesson plans.

CBSE statement on New Assessment Launch

“The new National Education Policy 2020 envisages a significant shift in the education ecosystem in India. It aims at preparing students for the 21st century and lays emphasis on competency-based education rather than an education which tests rote learning,”

CBSE is changing the methodology to impart better skills and knowledge to students. Similarly, MTG Foundation courses for Class 6 to 10 are also designed to develop competency in students at the base level. Students can not only enhances the learning skills with these foundation courses but also prepare for the higher competitive exams. These foundation courses are built with the aim to not only impart knowledge but also improve the learning to make students competent enough to give competitive exam like JEE Main and NEET.

These courses are available for Class 6, Class 7, Class 8, Class 9 and Class 10
