Freedom of Choice to Select Subjects in Class 11. CBSE Released Assessment Policy for Class 11 Admissions

On May 1, CBSE released class 10 assessment policy in view of cancelled CBSE Class 10 Board exams. The policy explained the process on the basis of which class 10 students will be assessed for results 2021. The policy not only explained the assessment criteria but also contained the CBSE instructions to schools for class 11 admissions (2021-2022).

Class 10 exams have been cancelled due to which assessment is strictly internal. Based on the marks student is allowed to take any subject of his choice. The students who will take admission in plus two in the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) affiliated schools can choose any combination of subjects from any stream.

CBSE Assessment Policy for Class 11 Admissions (2021-2022):

  1. No Streaming โ€“ CBSE has directed schools to avoid streaming (Arts/ Commerce/ Science/ Medical etc.) in class 11by keeping the boardโ€™s policy and also the New Education Policy in view. Students taking admission in class 11 are free to choose any combination of subjects from any streams โ€“ arts, science or commerce. In other words, a student may choose Mathematics,ย Physics, Geography, and Biology, English or any combination thereof.The CBSE in its newly released assessment criteria mentioned, “As per the scheme of studies of the board, students are allowed to offer any combination of subjects without any streaming, hence, schools should follow the same.”
  2. Students who have chosen Mathematics Basic in Class 10 are allowed to continue with the subject in Class 11 without prejudice.
  3. Any student who fails to qualify the class 10 Board examination 2021 (as decided by the school) is permitted to continue with his/her Class 11 with a pending compartment examination. Later, the school will conduct the compartment examination. As per the policy document, the compartment exam would be an objective paper based on sample papers shared by CBSE. Schools would have the discretion to conduct this exam in online or offline mode, depending on the situation.

CBSE Official Statement on the Decision:

CBSE official said that โ€œthe decision is not new and a student can choose one language and any four electives in any combination provided it is being taught in the school. An additional sixth subject can also be offered and studied on their own as per prescribed syllabus, out of the subjects offered by the board.โ€
