Introduction of Competency-Based Education
Like Rancho, probably some students also know how to apply theory in their lives. But what about others? So, this is why the concept of Competency-Based Education was introduced by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) as a quintessential part of the Education Ministry’s National Education Policy, 2020. To nurture students who know the real-life applications of their learnings.
Why only Competency-Based Education?
Going by the textbook definition, Competency-Based Education or CBE is a set of skills, abilities, and knowledge that helps an individual perform a given task in real life. It embraces the fact that every child is special and their special talent, if nourished properly, can work wonders not only for the child’s overall growth but for our nation’s growth as well. Basically, the emphasis of the CBE is to build a relationship between learners and society at large.
Notable changes introduced by CBE
- Elevate the application skills of the students – Your application skills depend on your conceptual clarity. This is why the new pattern of CBSE has not shelved the Subjective Questions The revised syllabus of Class 11 and 12 for the session 2024-25 will consist of 30% constructed response questions. This will typically comprise short answer questions/long answer type questions as per the existing pattern. In the last academic session, the weightage was 40%. Such type of questions test the student’s depth of a topic.
- Discourage rote learning – To help students shun the practice of rote learning, CBSE has put more onus on competency focused questions in the form of MCQs/case-based questions, and source-based integrated questions. The weightage of such questions has been raised from the last academic session’s 40% to 50% underlining its growing importance.
- Assess students’ ability to apply concepts in real-life scenarios – The new exam pattern consists of case-based questions and source-based integrated questions. These types of questions are instrumental in checking the student’s ability to apply concepts in real-life scenarios.
- Develop creative and critical thinking capacities – The learning gained by means of CBE is aimed at expanding the student’s horizon. There are situations when students are meant to come up with out-of-the-box solution which is not limited to their schools but their personal lives as well. This is where their creative and critical thinking abilities make all the difference.
These are some of the reasons why CBE holds paramount importance to CBSE. The fruition of CBE will be visible only in the coming years when we get a pool of innovators, thinkers, solution seekers, and achievers.
