Q.2. Which of the following statements is incorrect regarding RNA interference?

(a) It is a method of cellular defense.
(b) The introduction of DNA into the host cell produces both sense and anti-sense RNA.
(c) It involves silencing of a specific mRNA.

Q.3. Which of the following is not used as a bioweapons?

(a) Bacillus thuringiensis (b) Bacillus anthracis
(c) Rickettsia sp (d) Shigella sp

Answer

(a): Soil bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis is well known for its application in biotechnological uses for producing Bt crops. The bacterium produces proteins called cry protein, that kills certain insects like lepidopterans, coleopterans and dipterans. Therefore, Bt crops are being protected from these insects and loss in their yield can be controlled by this way.

Q.4. Bt cotton variety that was developed by the introduction of toxin gene of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) is resistant to

(a) insect pests (b) fungal diseases
(c) plant nematodes (d) insect predators.

Answer
(a): Bt cotton is resistant to cotton bollworm (insect pest) infestation. The genes cry IAc and cry IIAb control cotton bollworms, thus acts as bio-pesticide.

Q.5.  Which one of the following is a correct statement?

(a) “Bt” in “Bt-cotton” indicates that it is a genetically modified organism produced through biotechnology.
(b) Classical plant breeding involves fusion of two somatic cells carrying desired genes.
(c) The anticoagulant hirudin is being produced from transgenic Brassica napus seeds.
(d) Golden rice is a transgenic variety of rice rich in vitamin E.

Answer
(c): Transgenic Brassica napus seeds are being used to produce the anticoagulant hirudin. Bt in “Bt cotton” stands for Bacillus thuringiensis. This is naturally occurring soil bacterium. Classical plant breeding involves crossing or hybridisation of purelines, followed by artificial selection to produce plants with desirable traits whereas somatic hybridisation involves fusion of protoplast of two cells. Golden rice is a transgenic variety of rice rich in b-carotene (provitamin A – inactive state of vitamin A).

Q.6. Which of the following has been covered under the broad patent category by U.S. company?

(a) Triticum (b) Pisum sativum
(c) Basmati rice (d) Both (b) and (c)

Answer
(c)

Q.7.  Hirudin gene inserted in Brassica napus was

(a) synthesised chemically
(b) obtained from Bacillus thuringiensis
(c) obtained from Agrobacterium
(d) none of these

Answer
(a): Hirudin protein is known for its blood clotting prevention characteristic. Its gene was chemically synthesised and transferred into Brassica napus. Hirudin accumulates in the seeds of the transgenic crop. It is then extracted, purified and used as medicine

Q.8. In RNAi, the genes are silenced using

(a) ds-RNA (b) ss-DNA
(c) ss-RNA (d) ds-DNA.

Answer
(a)

Q.9. The bacteria Francisella tularensis causes disease in humans.

(a) plague (b) Q-fever (c) tularemia (d) small pox

Answer
(c): Tularemia is a rare infection disease, also known as rabbit fever or deer fly fever. It typically attacks the skin, eyes, lymph nodes and lungs. It is caused by the bacterium Francisella tularensis

Q.10. Read the following statements and select the correct ones.

(i) Cry proteins are toxic to insects and act as insecticides.
(ii) There are 53 amino acids present in insulin.
(iii) Bt-cotton was the first transgenic crop approved by commercial cultivation in India.
(iv) Brazzein is a high calorie-sweetner.

(a) (i) and (iii)
(b) (ii) and (iii)
(c) (ii) and (iv)
(d) (iii) and (iv)

Answer
(a): There are 51 amino acids present in insulin. Brazzein is a low calorie sweetner.
