Going by the latest report published on many news portals, the central government of India is contemplating to conduct board exams for class 12 students twice a year. This idea is in line with the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) that is likely to take shape from the year 2026 in June month. As of now, a CBSE class 12 student appears for a board exam once a year in February-March. The results of the board exams are announced in May. If a student doesn’t find his results satisfactory in a subject or fails in one of the subjects, he can re-appear for that particular subject in the June month of the same year.
The plan to save years and efforts
However, if a student has failed in more than one subject, there’s no such provision to appear in those subjects. The new plan seeks to address this limitation and endeavors to give such students a chance to perform better in their board exams without having to waste an entire year. It aims to work in line with the recommendations of National Education Policy 2020, which recommends moving away from high-stakes exams with a vast syllabus to biannual board exams to do away with the pressure on students.
The education ministry has sought a proposal from the CBSE for conducting two board exams for class 12. To make this happen, CBSE would require approximately 15 days to conduct the second set of board exams, and almost a month to declare the results. So, this would ultimately lead to the declaration of the result in the month of August. Considering the load on the teachers for marking and the schedule for entrance examinations, the government has stipulated that the first board exam should not be conducted before February.
