CBSE to Grant Full Marks For ‘Tricky’ Question In Class 12 Maths Paper

Update on: 25 Apr 2019, 04:52 PM

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has released a circular asking the evaluators to give full marks for a tricky question in Mathematics for class 12. As per the circular released, a six-mark question from the linear programming chapter could be attempted in two different ways, leading to two different results which is why students should be awarded full marks.

The CBSE has directed the evaluators to follow a separate marking system for question number 29 (Set 1 and 2) and question number 27 (Set 3).

The Controller of examination Sanyam Bharadwaj said, “The question number 29 does not have a technical issue but the question can be interpreted in two ways which is why the board has decided to give marks to the students who have answered it anyway.

Reactions of the Students and Teachers

This decision has not gone down well with the students and teachers. Neither the teachers nor the students have taken the circular positively and argued that it is unfair to those who solved it correctly.

  • Teachers believe that the question was straightforward and couldn’t confuse any student.
  • Students says that the board decision is not justified to those who solved the question.
  • Most of the students also feel that it would be unfair as wrong answers also get marks.

Moreover, the circular, which is generally given before the beginning of the evaluation process, was presented to the evaluators on the second day of the evaluation process in this case. Thus, many it may deprive several students of the benefit.

Meanwhile, defending its decision, the Board said that they have a policy in place to address the anomalies. In case any anomaly is noticed in the question paper then there is a mechanism to address the same. The board also emphasizes that the group preparing the marking scheme makes appropriate provisions to address the anomaly in such a manner that no student is put at a disadvantage and the genuine interest of the students are protected.
