CUET UG 2023: New High Record of Registrations; 50% Surge in Female Applicants

The Common University Test (CUET) has become one of India’s most popular entrance exams. This year, CUET (UG) has witnessed a record number of registrations, with 13.99 lakh candidates, indicating an increase of about 41% in undergraduate admission applications, according to UGC data. The number of female applicants increased by 50%, while the number of male applicants increased by 34%.

The National Testing Agency (NTA) received a total of 16.85 lakh registrations for CUET (UG) 2023, with 13.99 lakh completing the application process with fee submission. This represents an increase of 4 lakh registrations from the first edition of CUET in 2022.

The rise in the number of female candidates is a positive trend for the education sector, with 6.51 lakh females registering for CUET (UG) 2023 compared to 4.34 lakh in 2022. The number of male candidates also saw an increase, from 5.56 lakh in 2022 to 7.48 lakh in 2023.

Rise In Participating Universities

The increase in the number of participating universities from 90 in 2022 to 242 in 2023 is also encouraging, according to UGC Chairperson M. Jagadesh Kumar. This significant rise indicates that CUET (UG) is becoming a popular option for admissions to undergraduate programmes.

Rise In the Number of Candidates Among Different Categories

Among different categories, substantial growth was recorded in the number of candidates belonging to the scheduled tribes (ST) category, from 58,881 in 2022 to 95,119 in 2023. The Scheduled Caste (SC) category recorded a jump of 35%, with 1,40,307 students registering for CUET (UG) 2023. The Other Backward Classes (OBC-NCL) category witnessed an increase of 45.2% with 4,61,022 registrations.

The increasing number of registrations is a clear indication that the demand for higher education in India is on the rise. The popularity of the CUET (UG) has led to more universities participating in the exam, providing students with a wider range of options for admission to undergraduate programmes. The rise in the number of female candidates is a promising trend, reflecting the growing focus on gender equality in education.
