Deepawali, the festival of lights and the symbol of victory of good over evil, is celebrated every year on the day of Amavasya in the Kartik month of the Hindu calendar. This year, Diwali falls on 20th October 2025.
Diwali is one of the most beloved festivals in India and is joyfully celebrated by Hindus, Jains, Sikhs, and Newar Buddhists. It marks the triumphant return of Lord Ram to Ayodhya after rescuing Goddess Sita from the evil King Ravana. Known as the Maryada Purushottam — the “Supreme Man” — Lord Ram is revered as the 7th incarnation of Lord Vishnu.
It is believed that Lord Vishnu goes into a deep sleep (Yog Nidra) from the 11th lunar day of Ashadha to the 11th lunar day of Kartik. Therefore, instead of worshipping Lord Ram during this time, saints suggest worshipping Goddess Lakshmi. Along with her, devotees also worship Goddess Sarasvati and Lord Ganesh.
The reason behind worshipping Lord Ganesh is well known — he is the most righteous among all deities and is believed to be the adopted son of Goddess Lakshmi. But why worship Goddess Sarasvati during Diwali?
Because wealth (Lakshmi) cannot be sustained without wisdom (Sarasvati). True prosperity lies not only in riches but also in the knowledge to use them wisely. Hence, both Goddess Lakshmi and Goddess Sarasvati are worshipped together, for balance between material success and intellectual growth.
