After this announcement, there arises lots of query related to this. MTG Editorial Experts tried to answer the queries that we received so that they and many other like them would get the answers.

Syllabus, blueprint, class room teaching and internal assessment for both Mathematics-Basic and Mathematics-Standard are same. The only difference is in the level of difficulty of questions. On the basis of sample papers issued by CBSE on 20th September 2019 for the academic year 2019-20, it can infer that in Mathematics-Basics questions are too direct and easy.

Check what are the changes in class 10 sample paper pattern and marking schemeย .

In Mathematics-Standard questions are indirect, tricky and lengthy with higher difficulty level than that of even previous years papers. Even though it was mentioned in the CBSE Circular that Mathematics-Standard would be the same level as of the existing one, and the other would be an easier level.

Why there is a need to introduce two levels?

Most of the students find it difficult to get good marks in Mathematics as it is considered as a tough subject. The reason for introducing two levels of question papers for Mathematics in class 10 is to help those students who find mathematics a difficult subject and donโ€™t want to pursue Mathematics in higher studies and getting low percentage in their board exams because of low marks in Mathematics.

The Standard level will be meant for students who wish to opt for Mathematics at Senior Secondary level and the Basic level would be for students not keen to pursue Mathematics at higher levels. Students will have the right to choose between the two levels of Examination according to their aptitude and abilities, at the time of submission of List of Candidates (LoC) by the affiliated school to the Board online.

Basically, the idea is to make the evaluation more students centric and reduce the pressure on those students who donโ€™t want to pursue Mathematics after class X.

In case student fails at any level of Mathematics, he/she can appear at the compartment examination as per norms of the Board according to the options given below:

In case of failure inCompartment options
Mathematics -BasicMathematics -Basic
Mathematics-StandardMathematics-Standard or Mathematics-Basic

A student who qualifies the Mathematics-Basic, shall be given an option to appear in Mathematics-Standard at the time of Compartment exams as per the norms of the CBSE Board, in case he/she changes his/her mind to pursue Mathematics at Senior Secondary level. The students must have passing marks in Mathematics-Standard at class X, for taking up Mathematics at Senior Secondary level.

A student cannot opt for both Standard Level and Basic Level Exams. There is only one option, either Mathematics-Standard or Mathematics-Basic.

If a student wants to pursue courses in which Mathematics is compulsory like UG Courses in Mathematics or Engineering, opting Mathematics-Basic wonโ€™t help him/her.

All the best !
