The birth anniversary of Indian Constitution’s chief architect – Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar – is celebrated every year as Ambedkar Jayanti or Bhim Jayanti on April 14. In India, he is regarded as one of the leading figures for contributing remarkably toward nation-building in the pre- and post-independent India. The nation is celebrating his 133rd birth anniversary today. Born on April 14, 1891, Dr. B. R. Ambedkar faced discrimination in his childhood for coming from a Dalit Mahar family. Despite all the odds, he proved his mettle and worth to not only our country but to the entire world.

He is acclaimed as a social reformer, world-class lawyer, economist, a brilliant scholar among many others. He made unprecedented contributions to the betterment of socially oppressed people. He was the one who led the Dalit Buddhist movement in India. Babasaheb died on December 6, 1956 in Delhi. He was born in an untouchable family of Mhow (now in Madhya Pradesh) and he died on 6th December 1956 in Delhi.

  1. The actual surname of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar was Ambawadekar. But Mahadev Ambedkar, his teacher, added Ambedkar’s surname in the school records.
  2. Dr. B.R. Ambedkar was the first Indian to be honored with a Doctorate (Ph.D.) degree in Economics in a foreign country.
  3. He is accredited for placing “Ashok Chakra” in the Indian Tricolour. However, Pingali Venkayya was the one who designed our national flag – The Tricolor.
  4. In the 1950s only, he had wished for the division of Bihar and Madhya Pradesh so that the states could develop better. However, it took more than four decades for the states to split Chhattisgarh from Madhya Pradesh and Jharkhand from Bihar.
  5. Rajgirh – the personal library of Babasaheb – comprised 50,000+ books and it is said to be the world’s largest private library.
  6. Waiting for a visa – a book written by Dr. Babasaheb – is a textbook at Columbia University. In 2004, the university made a list of the world’s top 100 scholars and the first name on that list was Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar.
  7. Dr. Ambedkar is said to be a master in 64 subjects. He knew 9 languages – English, French, German, Marathi, Persian, Hindi, Pali, Sanskrit, and Gujarati. Moreover, for almost two decades, he studied all the religions of the world comparatively.
  8. He is also the first and only scholar in the world to be honored with a valuable doctorate named “Doctor All Science” from the London School of Economics.
  9. Based on a global survey called “The Makers of the Universe”, a list of the top 100 humanist people of the last 10 thousand years was made by Oxford University. Dr. B.R. Ambedkar ranked fourth on the list.
  10. In his book “The Problem of Rupee-Its Origin & its solution” – he has given many suggestions in the book about demonetization, one of the widely discussed topics of current times.
