Introduce a Broad Spectrum of Books and Genres

Introduce Fictions and Non-fiction books:

Fiction like science and adventure stories, excites the imagination and takes children on an exciting journey. Non-fiction serves as informational material that imbibes real-world facts in children. These two complement each other, and children should be motivated to go for both.

Include Poems and Rhyming Books:

Poems and rhymes develop language and rhythm skills in children.  Such language skills enhance creative awareness, mental abilities, social or emotional growth, and even physical development. Fun and easy-to-read poems could spark a lifelong appreciation for creative expression.

Biographies and Factual Books:

Books about celebrities, scientists, explorers, or famous historical events stimulate kids’ curiosity about their surroundings. By collaborating with real people and historical figures, non-fiction biographies allow children to develop feelings of empathy and a greater understanding of society.

Set and Celebrate Reading Goals:

Real Reading Goals:

The reading goals should be achievable and small.  This gives a sense of accomplishment, but it also must be big enough to give the learner the thrill of his effort towards it. For example, draw your child to read at least one book every week or a few pages every day.

 Create a Reward System:

To inspire the child further, a reward should be set up. Reward it with something worthwhile for each book or milestone achieved. For example, a special treat or even a new book. In the end, praise their effort and dedication, reinforcing the positive experience.

Attend Storytime Events or Book Fairs:

Participation in local Storytime events, author appearances, and book fairs would go a long way to capturing children’s interests in the books. These activities are entertaining and convivial settings for children to explore new books and share their love for reading with other children.
