Science Inspired from Mother Nature: Artificial Intelligence

Update on: 01 Apr 2021, 03:34 PM

Humans have spent decades to understand Mother Nature and perfecting the mathematical calculations to create these wonderful complex learning algorithms. We are getting inspired from nature and this time humans are looking beyond our own species to create Artificial intelligence.

Machine learning and artificial intelligence are the most crucial technological advancements in recent time. The present-day artificial intelligence is built to imitate nature โ€” the main chasing of this field is to replicate the decision making power present in nature into computers.

Earth does wonders and creates life. It keeps us jaw dropped with every mystery uncovered every day. Artificial intelligence is the Science that is completely Nature based to get its algorithms being created. It replicates the natural intelligence present in Mother Nature to create machines and robots with artificial intelligence.

Letโ€™s discuss different areas where Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics comes together to create an extra ordinary machinery for humans.

1. Artificial Neural Networks – Neural Networks are probably the most widely used Machine Learning algorithms. This artificial intelligence is used in creating regular consumer products like Mobiles and home appliances. It mimics the functioning of a neuron to pass information. Each layer provides an extra layer of data representation and allows you to model most complex problems.

Some of the examples where this artificial intelligence is used are Sentiment Analysis, Image Recognition/Detection, Language Correction, Robotics

2.ย Swarm /Collective Intelligence โ€“ Two most commonly known algorithms that show collective intelligence concept are Ant Colony Optimisation and Swarm Intelligence. In order to solve a problem, this artificial intelligence mimics the work of ant colony or swarm behaviour. It utilises multiple working agents having a basic behaviour, all the agentsโ€™ works together to bring out the more complex behaviour and result. Just like ant colony, where different individuals that works together to create a one big complete colony performing complex task.

Examples where this Artificial intelligence is been found are Robotics, Video Game AI, Manufacturing, Route Planning.

3.ย Artificial Immune System (AIS) โ€“ Artificial Immune System mimics the functioning of a Natural Immune System to carry out problem solving. Immune system in nature protects an organism from harmful microbes and substances by bringing out an immune response. It is the defence mechanism of an organism. AI is a subfield of biologically-inspired computing and natural computation with links to Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence. There are multiple algorithms commonly associated with AIS: Clonal Selection, Dendritic Cell, Negative Selection, and Artificial Immune Recognition.

Areas where this AIS is been used are Security Software, Autonomous Navigation Systems, Scheduling Systems, Fault Detection Software

AISs create/exchange binary antibodies that serve as spam detectorsย ย ย ย

4.ย Genetic Algorithms โ€“ It uses โ€˜survival of the fittestโ€™, evolutionary approach to perform various complex functions by analysing series of individuals over consecutive generations. Each generation have a population of strings just like chromosomes in the nucleus. Each individual string works uniquely to perform a set of functions and collectively to carry out a more complex task.

Areas where this Artificial intelligence is been used are Data Mining/Analytics, Robotics, Manufacturing/Design, Process Optimisation.

5.ย Reinforcement Learning – With groundings in psychology and a process reminiscent of classical conditioning, Reinforcement Learning (RL) supports the idea of providing a positive numerical response to a favourable action taken by an agent.

Areas where this AI is been used to carry out functions are Video Games, Controlling Autonomous Vehicles, Manufacturing Line Software, Financial Systems.

There are many areas where Mother Nature inspires us to enhance our technology. There is a great opportunity in artificial intelligence, and natural evolution provides us with a framework to study and prepare for the future of machine development.
