How to Create Concept Maps?

Creating Concept Maps is a simple 6-step process. Just follow the information sequence as per your preference and create an effective Concept Maps

  1. Take out a large sheet of paper and write down the central topic of a chapter (the main heading) that you are going to map. Encircle that topic with a specified color to represent it better.
  2. Draw branches radiating outwards from the central topic. Using a different color for each branch is helpful.
  3. Write keywords (headings) along with these branches that represent the central heading and subheadings and the topic you are mapping.
  4. Draw additional sub-branches that extend from your main branches. The words on these branches are the points to learn or subdivisions of subheadings you wrote on your main branches.
  5. Keep expanding the Concept Maps outwards with additional sub-sub-topics/keywords and branches.
  6. Create a complete connectivity chart to learn the relation between the topics and sub-topics. You can also write some important points about each topic to learn better.

Always keep in mind these rules while creating Concept Maps.

  1. Use keywords or short phrases on lines. The phrase must cover the core of the concepts.
  2. Use proper spacing between topics to avoid any confusion.
  3. Use stimulating images and colors throughout the map to divide and recognize faster.
  4. Draw attention to specific branches by creating boundaries and borders.
  5. Use UPPER and lower case to emphasize the importance of each word.
  6. Create a memorable central image and complementary visuals that come off the main branches.
  7. Draw different shapes to represent ideas and segments of the map.
  8. To improve memory and retain concepts, use images of varied colors, emphasis, and sizes.
