World Athletics Day Theme 2024

This year, the theme of World Athletics Day is the World Mile Challenge. It is centred around jogging, running, or taking a one-mile walk. The challenge is in honour of Roger Bannister breaking the 4-minute mile 70 years ago on May 6, 1954. There will be a web app focused on World Athletics Day that will let participants track the miles they run across the globe. In the last couple of years, World Athletics Day’s themes have concentrated on several facets of athletics, such as “Athletics for Health” in 2023 and “One World, One Team” in 2022.

History of World Athletics Day

The origin of World Athletics Day dates back to the year 1996. The day was envisioned by Primo Nebiolo, erstwhile President of the International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF), to propagate the values of athletics and encourage participation among youngsters. He launched World Athletics Day in the form of a social responsibility project called “Athletics for a Better World.” In its initial years, the day aimed at engaging youth to inspire the next generation of athletes, coaches, and officials. Schools and athletic clubs played a major role in shaping local events and activities.
